Redeemer鈥檚 School of Education is moving forward with its recently revised two-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) program this fall. At the same time, it will begin preparations for a one-year program that will launch after May 2027.

In April, the Province of Ontario proposed legislation that would condense teacher education programs to 12 months over three consecutive semesters, streamlining the current model of four semesters spread out over two years. In response, Redeemer will be ready to meet the first cohort of the new program next year, ensuring teacher education from a Reformed Christian perspective continues uninterrupted in Ontario.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking forward to welcoming this fall鈥檚 incoming class into the updated two-year program while also being able to offer a condensed teacher education program beginning next year that meets the needs and requirements of Ontario鈥檚 education system,鈥 says Dr. Peter Neumann, vice president, academic.

Through this time of transition in Ontario, we remain committed to our mission of teacher education for faithful, effective, reflective, professional practice that prepares teacher candidates of the highest calibre to give Ontario鈥檚 students the best possible start.

Incoming first-year students planning to come in fall 2026 may be experiencing uncertainty about their plans. To ensure stability for students, Redeemer will offer additional scholarships to all incoming and returning students for the 2026-2027 academic year. New students this fall will automatically receive a $2,000-per-year ($4,000 total) scholarship to provide additional support. Students returning for their second year this fall will automatically receive a $1,000 scholarship. Redeemer is providing support to the School of Education to further ensure that the new one-year program is ready for launch after May 2027. Redeemer will not defer current offers of admission into the September 2026 intake, consistent with its usual practice.

Preparation for the redesigned one-year (12 consecutive months) program will begin this summer. The program will meet guidelines set out in the proposed legislation and by the Ontario College of Teachers. Students will be prepared to enter classrooms across Ontario, in public, Catholic and independent schools, learning from a Christian perspective.

鈥淭hrough this time of transition in Ontario, we remain committed to our mission of teacher education for faithful, effective, reflective, professional practice that prepares teacher candidates of the highest calibre to give Ontario鈥檚 students the best possible start,鈥 says Dr. Phil Teeuwsen, dean of education.

Applications for the streamlined one-year BEd program will open September 1 and tuition for the 12-month 2027-28 program will be announced at a later date.
