Redeemer has added two new music programs to its offerings: a Music in Worship general major and a Church Music Ministry honours major, extending the music program from mainly performance to a program that can take graduates into a wide array of music-related careers. Music ministry students will find many opportunities to apply their degree in churches and other forms of ministry, such as camps, youth groups or senior facilities; leading choirs, praise teams or bands. Graduates could also pursue further training and accreditation in music therapy.
The new programs fulfill a key part of the Learn. Forward. strategic plan to expand degrees and programs that connect real-world learning opportunities to transformative, flexible classroom experiences. They will also gain valuable experiences that will prepare them to begin this ministry upon graduation, including participation in Chapel, ensembles, internships and other experiential learning opportunities.

The new programs will build on the core strengths of the current music program鈥檚 courses, lessons and ensembles, and draw upon courses in the religion and theology program. Students will have an opportunity to combine their love of music and their passion for ministry with a high-quality program that will educate them fully in the intersection between the two and prepare them for such ministry, whatever form it might take and wherever the Lord leads them.
鈥淭hese new music programs are rooted in a biblical foundation,鈥 says Dr. Chris Teeuwsen, professor of music. 鈥淭hey include strong perspectives in music in the historical church with solid practicums in one-on-one lessons and ensembles, preparing and equipping students in both traditional and contemporary styles of worship.鈥
The addition of the new music programs to Redeemer鈥檚 offerings is happening alongside other new program offerings including a new bachelor of kinesiology degree and a new Law and Public Policy minor.
