Redeemer has appointed Dr. Michael Haykin as a visiting professor of history. Haykin was appointed to the faculty at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) in 2007. He has a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Toronto, a Master of Religion from Wycliffe College and a Th.D. in church history from University of Toronto. He lives in Dundas, Ontario and worships at West Highland Baptist Church in Hamilton.

鈥淲e鈥檙e pleased and honoured to welcome Dr. Haykin to Redeemer as a visiting faculty member,鈥 said Dr. Kyle Spyksma, interim vice president, academic. 鈥淗is experience and passion for research and teaching will be a welcome addition to the faculty at Redeemer.鈥

Prior to his appointment as a visiting professor, Haykin has served on Redeemer鈥檚 senate and most recently taught a section of Western Culture and Tradition in the fall 2021 term. This interaction with students and Redeemer鈥檚 core program was a major impetus for seeking a stronger relationship with the university.

During his two-year appointment, Haykin will continue with his regular duties at SBTS while having opportunities to interact with Redeemer faculty and students. He will also teach up to four courses per year in History and in the core program, including our first-year sequence in Western Culture and Tradition.

Haykin was born in England and came to Canada with his parents as a boy. He has taught at a number of seminaries in Ontario, including serving as a Professor of Church History at Heritage College and Seminary (a position he has also recently returned to in a Core capacity); he was also the Principal of the Toronto Baptist Seminary and College for four years. He has published widely on early modern and ancient Christian history and spirituality, including many books for both scholarly and popular audiences.
