Who’s speaking?

Maranatha Weeks was raised in Quebec along with four other siblings. She was an avid reader and lover of people. At age four, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and after a 13-year journey, she left her daughter with the final words “live for Jesus”. Motivated by her mother’s life of devotion, and struck by a high school presentation on HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, Maranatha put away her dreams as a writer and pursued nursing.

Maranatha received her bachelor’s degree in nursing, and her diploma in tropical nursing at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. In 2015, she joined the Disaster Assistance Response Team with Samaritan’s Purse and became part of the rescue efforts for the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador, Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, and serving the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. At 25 years of age she found herself on the front lines of Mosul, Iraq, working in the emergency field hospital to treat the victims of ISIS, and ISIS members themselves. Every night in her bunkhouse, she wrote down her experiences at war.

In December 2018, Maranatha published her first book From the Plains of Nineveh: A Nurse on the Front Lines of Mosul. She continues to advocate for the impoverished and resides on the South Shore of Montreal with her husband and five children.
